2007 SFA encuentro

The 2007 Encuentro has come to a sucessful close - please click here to fill out your evaluation.

August 30 - September 3, 2007 - Immokalee, FL

This year's Encuentro will provide an invaluable opportunity for the student and youth movement in solidarity with the CIW to coordinate its activities for the upcoming year as we take the growing campaign against Burger King - and the rest of the industry - to exciting new terrain!

Registration, fee & scholarships:

  • Registration for the 2007 Encuentro is now closed.
  • There is a $50-$150 sliding scale fee for attending the Encuentro. We strongly encourage participants to pre-pay online by clicking here (select 'other' and enter the amount).
  • The majority of the money collected from registration will fund scholarships for participants who would otherwise not be able to attend. The rest will be used to cover other costs for the weekend: food, housing, materials, meeting space, and transportation. We wouldn't ask for the money if we didn't truly need it.

Travel + when to arrive & leave

  • Please arrive in Ft. Myers by 5:00pm on Thursday, August 30. The weekend will wrap up Monday, September 3. Please make arrangements to depart Monday no earlier than 3:00pm.
  • Please forward your flight/travel info to meghan (at) sfalliance.org. We will coordinate transportation from the airport to Immokalee and vice versa.

Program + Burger King action

  • Click here for an outline of the Encuentro program.
  • On Friday, August 31, we will travel to Miami for a major protest at BK Corporate Headquarters. We encourage all Miami-area allies to join us! The action will take place from 11:30am to 1:45pm at 5505 Blue Lagoon Drive, Miami. Check out these resources and background (pdf) on the BK campaign.

What to bring + housing

  • Most importantly, bring your commitment to take the campaign back to your community - rather than a general activist conference, the Encuentro is a training & strategy opportunity for folks committed to working on CIW-led campaigns over the next year and beyond.
  • Bring a sleeping bag and pillow (and sleeping pad if you need that to be comfortable); your registration fee (or pay online before you come); a bowl, cup, and eating utensils; and art and campaign literature to share with others.
  • Housing will be provided for participants from Thursday evening through Monday morning. Most housing is gender-neutral floor space - the best we can do given the severe limitations of holding this gathering in a place such as Immokalee. If you need a bed or sofa for health reasons, please let us know in advance.

Volunteering

  • Each participant will need to spend some time volunteering with some basic tasks to help keep our cooking dishes and meeting spaces clean; our meals coming on time; and, overall, the weekend running smoothly.
  • If you have experience with food prep or cooking for large groups and would be interested in volunteering with the food team, contact us.
