2008 steering committee retreat

What follows is a thumbnail sketch of some of the key decisions and commitments that were made at the Steering Committee face-to-face meeting January 25-28, 2008 in Immokalee. We hope these notes will provide some transparency and accountability within the SFA network. As a grouping of people acting within an autonomous, fluid network, we hope to provide some national scope to the organization and support on upcoming campaign and organizational needs. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us.

steering committee accountability & communications
SC members will each share a short, monthly progress report with the rest of the SC for the duration of their term, and will communicate through bi-monthly conference calls. There was a general agreement about using a consensus-based model for making major decisions with less crucial decisions made through a majority vote over the SC listserv. A "buddy system" is put into place to give each SC member someone to call upon for support when questions or important decision arise. The SC will try to meet face-to-face, when possible, at major CIW mobilizations.

campaign
As a collective the SC commits to organizing locally (and helping to facilitate nationally) actions for the March 31, 2008 SFA National Day of Action; participate in the 2008 Student/Labor Week of Action; and research campuses with Burger King restaurants or other contractual ties; film their own "tomato freakout" videos; and revisit ideas for keeping campaign energy up over the summer. Contact us for more details on our plans for the campaign.

fundraising
Each SC member commits to raising $500 for SFA over the course of the year and signing up 5 new people for the SFA Sustainer Program as well as becoming sustainers themselves.

encuentro
Agreed to hold the 4th SFA Encuentro in Immokalee at some point in August/September, 2008. Planning for this year's Encuentro must start sooner than it did last year; SC will play role in this. SC working group will work on securing food donations for Encuentro as soon as major CIW Spring mobilization is over, at which point general Encuentro planning will also begin.

sfa network development
Committed to holding network-wide SFA calls periodically but especially in lead-up to major actions. SC committed to help provide a workshop guide, bibliography of books/articles relevant to the campaign, and more literature making connections between the Fair Food/CIW and other struggles on the SFA site.

staff transition
2 SFA staff are coming up on their unofficial term limits; the question of staff transition will be revisited in-depth after the Spring mobilization in a joint process by the SC, SFA staff, and CIW.

working groups
SC members commit to being the point people for and/or helping to revive the various SFA working groups. These groups are Fundraising, Materials (production and distribution), People of Color, Research, and Translation. These groups are open to the entire SFA network; contact us at organize (at) sfalliance.org if you're interested in becoming a part of one or more.
