February 14, 2006 MEChA de Notre Dame stands committed to the fight for the liberation of those brothers and sisters of ours that live under oppression and exploitation. We believe that the ethic of profit and competition, of greed and intolerance must be replaced by justice and dignity. Our brothers and sisters in Immokalee have been living and laboring under the seam of oppression and exploitation for too long. Therefore, abiding by the principles outlined in our founding documents, upon which we as an organization stand, we, the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan of Notre Dame (MEChA de ND), stand in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) in any action that is directly related to fair wages for the workers. With the Coalition, we demand that McDonald's pay a fair price for their tomatoes and work with the CIW to end human rights violations in the fields. We call on McDonald’s to follow Taco Bell’s lead and create a road of justice for workers in its supply chain. We join the CIW in calling on the world's largest restaurant chain to stop side-stepping the issues by creating inadequate alternatives such as Socially Accountable Farm Employers (SAFE). McDonald's, like Taco Bell, is morally and economically responsible for its supply chain and must work with the CIW to end farm worker injustices. |
