The past weekend, students from dozens of universities picketed, marched and delivered letters to Wendy’s establishments across the country in support of the Wendy’s student boycott launched last month!
In Ann Arbor, students shared some big news during the national weekend of action: The University of Michigan is officially adopting SFA’s student boycott of Wendy’s! With this exciting announcement, students are committing to no longer purchase at Wendy's and organize in support of the student boycott on campus until the 'old fashioned' company signs an agreement with the CIW.
“Today we’re joining thousands of students around the country boycotting Wendy’s over their refusal to join the Fair Food Program,” said Kim Daley, a student at the University of Michigan. “Our campus is home to two Wendy’s restaurants, and we’re prepared to continue spreading the word among the student community and taking action until Wendy’s backs this proven human rights solution.”
In addition to UofM, other Wendy's schools led the charge this past weekend. Ohio State University SFA in conjunction with Real Food Challenge OSU organized their second action in five days, following a protest outside the newly-opened Wendy’s near campus last Monday. Over on Long Island, students at SUNY-Stony Brook led a march across campus before paying a visit to Wendy’s, putting the company on notice that they’re only getting warmed up.
Even with finals season in full swing, students from coast to coast showed no signs of fatigue. Members of the Rio Grande Valley SFA marched from the University of Texas Pan American campus to a nearby Wendy’s. Students from M.E.C.h.A. de Washington State University – fresh from the boycott declaration at M.E.C.h.A. Nationals two weeks ago – delivered a manager letter, while students at Georgetown University hosted CIW on campus and circulated pledges committing students to boycott Wendy’s.
Check out these photos from other actions across the #FairFoodNation, including Tennessee State University, New College of Florida and Gannon University. And stay tuned for more actions planned by MEChistas for later this week. The semester is going out with a bang, and we’re promising Wendy’s a summer full of action heat!
