The fellow with the camera is our friend Michael VanDervort, seen here recording a peaceful protest held by members of Tampa Bay Fair Food at a Publix grand opening in August 2010. (Note the resting of the arm on that sign for image stability—nice technique!)

Since Publix still hasn't disclosed exactly what it does with the footage that it's been accumulating for about a year now—video of countless children, families, and consumers peacefully picketing outside its stores—we decided to turn the tables and introduce you all to our buddy MIke.

VanDervort is one of a legion of "human resources," "media relations," and "union avoidance" specialists and consultants deployed by Publix to follow, document, research, deflect, misrepresent, and otherwise attempt to stifle the growing chorus from farmworkers and their allies that Publix take responsibility for the conditions in its tomato supply chain. (Some of these 'professionals' have even had to work 30 days in a row to follow us around including on—gasp—weekends.)

If you'd like to learn more about MIke, you can check out this link. Or this one, this one, or even this one. It's only fair—him and his buddies have possibly spent some time watching you.

And if you think all of this is getting to be just a little ridiculous and it would be a much better use of everyone's time, energy and resources for Publix to simply sit down at the table with farmworkers and do the right thing—as nine corporations (and counting...) have already done—you can help make that message clear to Publix today.
