SFA Chapters & Fair Food Groups

Students and their university's administrations have an important role in the food system. Students and youth are "market targets" for food corporations and universities are ideal institutions for consumption. Organizing an SFA chapter on your campus is a way to support the CIW's Campaign for Fair Food using the leverage you have as a student. It is also a form of making sure that year after year students are learning and taking action in the Campaign.

To start a chapter, gather a small base of allies and research what club or group registration looks like on your campus. You don't need to start with a large group right away. Also, make sure to contact us at organize@sfalliance.org when you start this process! We are a national network that supports each other and there are plenty of folks ready to make sure your chapter is successful.

SFA Organizing Committee

The Organizing Committee (OC) is SFA’s main organizing and leadership body, comprised of a dynamic group of 10-15 student and youth leaders from around the country. The OC works closely with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) to grow and strengthen SFA’s national network.

As part of the OC, members serve as regional organizers in the Campaign for Fair Food for one calendar year. Throughout their term, members receive training and develop their skills in order to educate, organize, and mobilize support in and beyond their respective communities. While the OC is rooted in CIW’s particular farmworker organizing context, it continues networking, acting in solidarity, and representing SFA in its regions.

Immersion Visits & Alt Breaks

Want to spend your academic break learning about and visiting one of the most historic farmworker movements? Come visit us at the CIW Community Center in Immokalee, Florida.

  • Each year, dozens of students and youth groups from across the nation make their way to Immokalee during their spring, winter and summer breaks to dive deep into the culture and undertaking of the birthplace of one of the most successful worker-led movements of our generation!

These alternative break trips – ranging from a couple of hours to several days – provide students with an incredible opportunity to learn more about life in Immokalee, the groundbreaking work of the CIW, and the critical role students and consumers play in the struggle for human rights in our country’s food industry.

With over 20 years of experience coordinating immersion trips, SFA is well-equipped to arrange an alternative break visit for your group!
